Awka – The Federal Government has urged unemployed youths to explore various initiatives it has opened to tackle unemployment.
The government advice was dropped by the Minister of state for education, Professor Anthony Anwuka who represented President Muhammadu Buhari at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University 2018 convocation ceremony.
The government said that in today’s global economy of which Nigeria is part and driven by private sector creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship, with the knowledge and skills graduates have acquired “they are ready for the world of work”.
This is because persons equipped with the requisite skills, namely: technical/vocational and entrepreneurship, they are ready for mobilisation through adequate supports to enable them create employment for themselves and through that also for others or enter skills-based jobs in the private sector.
It recounted government initiatives for tackling unemployment as: N-power, the Bank of Industry’s Youth Entrepreneurship Support (YES) programmes, the Central Bank of Nigeria and Bank of Agriculture support schemes.
It urged the graduands to familiarise themselves with and seize the opportunity of the programmes to become gainfully employed.
Earlier in his address the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Joseph Ahaneku, listed the achievements of his administration, which included: maintenance of academic calendar; improvement of teaching and learning standard and sustenance of conducive environment for learning.
Ahaneku also said the University was selected to run the 2018 Rhodes Scholarship for West Africa.
Besides, the University won the Confucius Institute of the Year Award for the third consecutive time.
This is apart from the fact that the University has been selected as one of the pilot tertiary institutions for the development of a new vision for the teaching of French language in Nigeria.
Former National Special Adviser to the President Chief Ben Ndii Obi, who was one of the three persons who received honorary doctorate degrees thanked the University for the honour and promised to continue to assist the University.
