Lamar’s “DAMN” was announced as the recipient of the prestigious Pulitzer award on Monday, a history-making as the first non-classical or jazz artist to win the award, as the music award is typically given to classical or jazz works.
The 2017 Pulitzer Prize for music went to “Angel’s Bone,” an opera by composer Du Yun.
“DAMN” picked up best rap album at the award show. His song “Humble” also picked up best rap performance, best rap song and best music video.
The revered rapper is also the most commercially successful musician to receive the award, usually reserved for critically acclaimed classical acts who don’t have a spot on the pop charts.
The 30-year-old won the prize for DAMN, his raw and powerful Grammy award-winning album.
The Pulitzer board said Monday the album is a “virtuosic song collection” and said it captures “the modern African American life.” He will win $15,000.
