Wale Tinubu’s business and philanthropic accomplishments are far too great to be covered by one article, but we’re going to try. On the back on the recently launched United Nations Nigeria Humanitarian Fund, we celebrate some of this great man’s most inspiring achievements.
Jubril Adewale Tinubu – popularly referred to as Wale Tinubu – was born in Lagos in 1967 and has grown to be one of Africa’s most enterprising and impactful business leaders. Here are three of the most notable moments of his career so far.
With origins from when Wale Tinubu first transported diesel in an old World War 2 tanker so many years ago, Oando has grown to become one of Africa’s largest energy solutions provider, operating in the upstream, midstream and downstream sectors.
One of Wale Tinubu’s most defining moments at Oando occurred in 2014 when he led the acquisition of the Nigerian upstream arm of ConocoPhillips, the American multinational energy corporation. The deal, reportedly worth $1.7 billion, made Oando Nigeria’s largest indigenous oil and gas producer.
After graduating from secondary school at Federal Government College of Odogbolu in 1983, Wale Tinubu went on to acquire a postgraduate degree from the prestigious London School of Economics; this would have influenced the primary goal of Oando Foundation, giving every child access to quality education.
Education is one of the pillars on which any great society stands and Wale Tinubu knows this. With his charity works via the Oando Foundation, 60,000 young individuals now have access to improved learning environments.
The UN Nigeria Humanitarian Fund (NHF)
One of Wale Tinubu’s crowning humanitarian strides is partnering with the United Nations and other business leaders such as Jim Ovia and Ibukun Awosika to launch the much-needed United Nations Nigeria Humanitarian Fund (NHF). The fund aims to provide urgent humanitarian relief to the most affected people in the country.
The fund has already raised $70m to boost humanitarian activities in assistance in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe.
Yes, his work has undoubtedly created a lasting impact, touching potentially millions of lives across Africa. And yes, he does have some pretty nice dance moves. But above all, Wale Tinubu is a thoughtful and passionate human being who genuinely cares about people and making the world a better place.
Here’s to the King of African Oil. Keep winning.
