Segun, a young Nigerian youth, found himself in crossed roads after failing the Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB), a Nigerian entrance examination board for tertiary-level institutions. While striving to pursue his dreams to be a professional one day, he wrote JAMB, came out with a good result but his happiness was shortlived as he had no one to train him. He still summoned the courage to write another with no hope of money coming from anywhere. He passed but finances stalled his progress.
However, as a millennial, he grew to understand the power of social media. So he decided to share his plight to the social world. And this time, he was offered a scholarship if only he passed his JAMB. ‘That’s easy,’ he thought, having gone through the process and coming out successful in the past. Despite the saga tagged with JAMB and their regularities, he hoped that his result would be that of the lot but the present drowned his hope.
In a similar form, he took to the social media platform that offered him hope to foretell his famous end. An end that would make him famous in the present world. A trending topic that would only stand virality for at least two days and leave a backstabbing scar in the minds of loved ones and family. In his live video, he tried to commit suicide using a poisonous insecticide, Sniper, famous for killing rodents. He was no rodent, he was a young boy in his prime.
How fortunate he was that Ijebu Ode was not a dead beat town. It was a place where loved ones could reach him, a place where medical facilities were in place to keep him in a stable condition.
But if only…
If only Segun understood the beauty of failures and the futility of counting the blessings of peers before his own. If only Segun realized that he was not the only person JAMB has jammed. We all have familiar cases of people writing JAMB more than five times and never giving up. If only he understood how valuable his life is and how many would strive to have the gift of life right now.
If only he did, he might not have sent this tweet:
