28-year-old singer, The Weeknd, has reportedly filed court documents against Eymun Talasazan, a realtor who filed for the “Starboy” trademark shortly after The Weeknd dropped his chart-topping album of the same name in 2016. This legal move follows Talasazan’s attempt to trademark a comic book 11 days after The Weeknd and Marvel announced a Starboy comic book collaboration, which hits shelves in June.
Forbes recalls that the real estate agent who is infamous for his shady business antics previously filed trademarks for “Straight Outta Bombton” and “Runnin’ Through the 6” in an attempt to ride the coattails of rap icons N.W.A and Drake, respectively. It’s not hard to see why Talasazan would try to capitalize off The Weeknd now: Starboy debuted atop the Billboard 200 albums chart and ultimately went platinum, spawning two Top 10 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, including the chart-topping title track. Starboy also snatched the Best Urban Contemporary Album award at the 2018 Grammys.
The Weeknd also clocked in at No. 6 on Forbes’ Highest-Paid Entertainers list in 2017, raking in $92 million thanks to billions of streams and the massively successful Starboy: Legend of the Fall World Tour. In other words, the Canadian superstar has plenty of resources to put toward thwarting Talasazan’s trademark attempt.
